Statius (Publilius Papinius), c.A.D. 48-96, born at Naples, was a lifelong partly professional poet (and son of a poet) and reciter who won at contests in Naples and later in Rome and was crowned by the emperor Domitian (81-96) to whom he was in effect a court and society poet.
